  14.                      ~ What Are WisDom and Diskcom? ~

  17.      A  very good word don't you think?   It means  "Disk  Communications" 
  18. which  sums  WisDom  up  very well,  by using  WisDom,  you  are  able  to 
  19. communicate with other users by means of a floppy disk.
  20.  
  21.      This  is  because  WisDom is really a BBS on  floppy  disk,  it  will 
  22. enable  you  to talk to other computer users from all over the  world  who 
  23. have  the same interests as you do.   If you are looking for DTP  contacts 
  24. then  just  type in a number of commands and you will have a list  of  all 
  25. DTP  contacts  on WisDom.   You are then able to talk to them all  in  the 
  26. public pool, or send one of them a private mail.

  28.      Because WisDom is completely ASCII based (no graphics,  no GEM etc..) 
  29. it is easy to convert it for any computer system,  ranging from TOS 1.x to 
  30. TOS  4.x,  DOS  1.x to DOS  5.x,  Workbench,  System  7,  CP/M,  GEOS,  on 
  31. computers ranging from the good old Atari ST to the Falcon,  the old  PC's 
  32. we seem to be stuck with at college,  to the 386/486's other students seem 
  33. to be able to use (?),  the Amiga A1000 to the Amiga A1200,  an Apple  Mac 
  34. Classic  to the Apples creating The Sun's front page,  even a PCW (!)  and 
  35. my  good  old Commodore C64 running BASIC,  my VIC20 (although slow  on  a 
  36. audio cassette tape system...)  But have you got the point?   This program 
  37. can be converted to any computer within a couple of hours,  okay, a couple 
  38. of  weeks,  each different system using the same datafiles and all of  you 
  39. talking to each other, whether you have a PC, C64 or an Atari.

  43.                   ~ How Does The Diskcom System Work? ~

  46.      A   BBS  system  will  be  updated  every  time  a  user   logs   on.  
  47. Because WisDom is disk based it means that you have to send the disk  back 
  48. to  the  System  Compiler,  or SYSCOM,  in order for  all  new  users  and 
  49. messages  to be updated.   You could send your disk back every  month,  or 
  50. every  two months,  or even every week if WisDom is  getting  busy.   Each 
  51. update will have a "Best Before Date",  which tells the user an ideal date 
  52. to  send  the disk back for an update.   Any disks sent back  before  this 
  53. date  will be kept until the date has past.   Exactly when you  send  your 
  54. disk  back is up to you;  there is nothing saying that you can't  send  it 
  55. back once a year if you wanted!

  62.      Now  that I have told you what WisDom is,  I'll tell you how  it  was 
  63. written.   Below is a diary that I've been keeping,  it not only  contains 
  64. details on WisDom that I've done,  but also home and and college life.  In 
  65. some places you may find it amusing!   Next issue I hope to talk about all 
  66. the  troubles  and  joys  that I've  had  writing  it.   WisDom  has  (and 
  67. hopefully will remain so) been a very big part of my life;  lots of  spare 
  68. time has gone into it and I've got lots of stories to tell.

  71. ??/07/92  -    WisDom is thought up and I get support from Shane,
  72.                so I start to write it.  Didn't get too far, draw
  73.                the main menu in an art package and got a
  74.                colourful window routine written.
  75.  
  76. ??/08/92  -    Idea: Lets make WisDom look like a real BBS!  This
  77.                will result in a shorter source code, it will also
  78.                be possible to convert the program easily for
  79.                different computers.

  81. 14/09/92  -    Version 1.β has been ready for release for a
  82.                number of weeks now, I'll give it to Shane on
  83.                Wednesday so that he can test it.  Great day at
  84.                college, why is it that all the students who use
  85.                the computer floor to type their essays up can
  86.                use the nice 386's (running at 33Mhz!) when us
  87.                computer students who need "power computing" have
  88.                to put up with the 8088's with mono monitors
  89.                running slower than my VIC20?
  90.  
  91. 19/09/92  -    Version 2.β is created.  This version asks the
  92.                user what interests he/she has, so that he/she can
  93.                talk only to other people with the same interests.
  94.                The same goes for computer type as well.
  95.  
  96.                I started at 11:00, it is now 20:00, and for the past
  97.                four hours I have been trying to get the "Show
  98.                Users" procedure to only show users with the same
  99.                computer and same interests as the user.  My brain
  100.                has now gone dead and so I'm having a rest for a
  101.                while.
  102.  
  103.                As far as college goes, we have a C assignment
  104.                that has to be in the first week in October.  The
  105.                only problem is, none of us know anything about C
  106.                because we only started this year, but the
  107.                assignment is to fill in the spaces in a C program
  108.                that uses the mouse etc...  Talk about putting us
  109.                in the deep end!  Most of my machine code
  110.                programs are now complete, the last one is to
  111.                convert a string into an integer, or something
  112.                like that, I'll have a look at it next week.
  113.  
  114.                COBOL is boring!  We're now doing DBASE which
  115.                isn't too bad.  The worst thing is that we are
  116.                doing payrolls with Sage Payroll, just the thing a
  117.                computer student needs to know about, I don't
  118.                think.  Anyway, I'm now off downstairs to watch
  119.                Casualty.

  122. 26/09/92 -     Just watched Casualty and decided to try to get
  123.                WisDom to work.  Semi-successful.  I've changed the
  124.                way that the computer type and interests are
  125.                stored and it seems to work.  All apart from when
  126.                I have all computers and all interests, one user
  127.                who has an Amiga and likes DTP, doesn't show up on
  128.                the list?  Well I'm off to watch Commando now.

  130. 06/10/92 -     Just to say that I'm still here.  I haven't done
  131.                anything on WisDom for ages because a load of
  132.                deadlines are coming up at college.  By the way,
  133.                Commando wasn't a very good film.

  135. 26/10/92 -     I've been very busy at college just lately, so issue
  136.                12 of PDP was even late.  I got the machine code
  137.                and the C assignment done, waiting for my mark
  138.                now.  Have started to fill in my UCCA/PCAS form.

  140.                Great news, as far as I can see, the show users
  141.                procedure is now working.  Now to change the
  142.                messages section.  See you later......

  144.                Something funny going on here!  I changed the read
  145.                from pool procedure and it worked fine, I then
  146.                went downstairs to have some dinner and when I
  147.                came back, it didn't work anymore??  I took out
  148.                all changes and it still didn't work.  Then, for
  149.                some reason it started to work again!  A gremlin
  150.                is lurking around I think...  Well I've got to bike
  151.                to the village to post some letters.  Be back
  152.                soon.

  154.                OK, Jackie Bramble's gone, Steve Wright's here,
  155.                it's 3:00pm and the pool is now working!  So what
  156.                do I do now?  Well, I've got to tidy up little
  157.                bits, get ASCII import and export working.

  159.                Tidied bits up, had a look at TEMP because it
  160.                didn't work, fixed it.  Should be finished
  161.                tomorrow.

  163. 27/10/92       I have been busy, been programming all morning,
  164.                we're halfway through the Jackie Bramble show now.
  165.                Improvements are: the show users procedure tells
  166.                you the total number of users with the interests
  167.                (the ones shown) and the grand total of users.  To
  168.                speed up the diskcom section, it doesn't check how
  169.                many messages/private mail you have each time you
  170.                enter the menu, it now has it as a separate option
  171.                (Status).  You are told how many relevant messages
  172.                in pool (ones with the same interests as you), the
  173.                total number, number of private mail and the total
  174.                number.  You even get snazzy graphics to show the
  175.                computer sorting.

  177.                All that's left to do is to allow the user to
  178.                import ASCII.
  179.  
  180.                Funny things are going on in the import ASCII
  181.                procedure...  Had to hack about with the diskcom
  182.                status procedure, got it all sorted.  I've noticed
  183.                that the show users procedure wasn't working
  184.                correctly so I'll have to have a look.  I'll also
  185.                sort out the ASCII problem.  One big problem, it's
  186.                gone past 6pm and there's nothing decent on the
  187.                radio anymore.

  189.                16 odd hours gone, two days of my holiday gone,
  190.                and WisDom looks as if it's ready to be sent out
  191.                to my "testers" again.  Can't get ASCII to work,
  192.                "can't be bothered" to sort it out at the moment.

  194.                All that's left to do is to write up the
  195.                documentation and write the "supervisor" version
  196.                of WisDom that will let me look after the system
  197.                once it's running.

  199. 04/11/92       WisDom_S is born.  This is the version that
  200.                everyone wants because it's the System Compiler's
  201.                version.  This allows the user (limited access to
  202.                SYSCOMs only) to view usernames and passwords,
  203.                details about new users, merge and read messages
  204.                etc..  I got the view usernames and passwords and
  205.                details about new users working.
  206.  
  207.                College: Bank 2 in L502 has has more computers
  208.                added onto it.  Unfortunaly more "CAS" PCs have
  209.                been added, these computers are very unreliable.
  210.                Some of them also have amber monitors.  Some of
  211.                the computers on the new bank 3 kept tripping the
  212.                switch on the power socket.
  213.  
  214.                The best thing that has happened is that some
  215.                FDITs are sending messages to each other on the
  216.                printer queue, and me and a friend have been putting
  217.                messages like "Please report to me - Supervisor"
  218.                onto it and watching all the people messing about
  219.                quickly quit from the printer queue and get on with
  220.                their work.  It's really funny!
  221.  
  222. 07/11/92 -     I sent a small number of WisDom2's out for test
  223.                purposes.  I received many suggestions and found
  224.                many small little bugs.  Features added today were
  225.                a print out option of messages, and I got ASCII
  226.                working.  Things to work on will be a feature
  227.                where you will be given a menu of all the messages
  228.                and you can select which one you want to read,
  229.                instead of having to go through all of them just
  230.                to read the last one.

  232. 20/11/92 -     It's nearly time, advertising is already going on,
  233.                everyone is waiting...  Tonight I've put in a date
  234.                check routine which will check to see if there is
  235.                a battery clock installed, if not then it asks the
  236.                time.  This is so that messages can be date
  237.                stamped properly.  I'm going to write the
  238.                instructions tonight.  Things left to do are to
  239.                improve the text editor, that should take up most
  240.                of my spare time tomorrow.

  242.                Good news!  My friend John has been busy working
  243.                at his Amiga and AMOS package, transferring WisDom
  244.                over to the Amiga.  I've been told that most of it
  245.                works, if this is the case then it shouldn't be
  246.                two long before this version is ready to go
  247.                online.

  249.                Documentation done, I'm now going to change the
  250.                datafile filenames.  
  251.  
  252.                College news:  We now have a third bank of computers 
  253.                in  one  room,  a nice bank  of  486s.   We've  been 
  254.                having some trouble lately with them,  when you turn 
  255.                on of them on or off,  it trips a switch in the fuse 
  256.                box which turns off the whole bank.   Very annoying!  
  257.                The printers have also gone "under  re-development".  
  258.                
  259.                We  now  have the "printer  swiper"  back  on,  this 
  260.                means  that when you want to print something out  on 
  261.                the  printers,  you have to pass your  student  card 
  262.                (the  barcode  part)  through  the  "swippy   thing" 
  263.                connected  to the computer.   This then  sends  your 
  264.                printout  to the printer.   This stops  people  from 
  265.                keep  pressing PRINT SCREEN,  because only the  last 
  266.                printout  sent  will  be  let  through  the  printer 
  267.                swiper.

  269.                It's also supposed to stop students (usually  girls, 
  270.                sexist I know,  but it's true) sending massive great 
  271.                assignments  written   using DTP packages  going  to 
  272.                the printer,  as you may know,  these sort of  print 
  273.                jobs are VERY big and take ages to print out.   They 
  274.                also  make the paper very wet with ink (we  use  ink 
  275.                jets),  and I'm always after one of these and so get 
  276.                a  massive great ink splat on the back of  my  work.  
  277.                
  278.                Well the printer swiper did stop this last year,  it 
  279.                wouldn't  allow a print job through over  a  certain 
  280.                size.   It does the same this year, but the limit is 
  281.                4megs.   When  you think that a file 400K takes  for 
  282.                ages to print,  just think how long a 4meg file will 
  283.                take, so much for the limit!  
  284.  
  285.                Also  on  the printer  front,  the  printer  console 
  286.                which  some  students  were  writing  rather   nasty 
  287.                messages  on,  has been taken off the  network  now.  
  288.                Fortunately,   I've  got  a  copy  of  this  program 
  289.                actually in my area,  hidden,  packed,  crunched etc 
  290.                so  that  the supervisor can't find it and  lock  my 
  291.                area  What a nasty person I am!   This program joins 
  292.                a  large collection of supervisor  un-friendly  "get 
  293.                your  area  locked if found" software that's  in  my 
  294.                area,  like  a memcopy program,  and a copy  of  the 
  295.                "Commander Keen" platform game.
  296.  
  297.                21/11/92  -      While working on  WisDom  ,  little 
  298.                bits of it started to "fall off".   I found quite  a 
  299.                number  of errors,  and even shortened  sections  of 
  300.                the  code.   This morning I wrote a new text  editor 
  301.                procedure,  this  new one saves the text  in  memory 
  302.                until you press #.   you now have the option to edit 
  303.                a  line.   A  load of WisDom disk labels  came  from 
  304.                good old John Maclaren (Scanman) today,  along  with 
  305.                the front cover for the christmas issue of PDP.

  310. 24/11/92 -     Went to the Shopper Show, bought a second disk
  311.                drive (about time) and re-wrote parts of WisDom
  312.                so that you don't have to keep using drive A, you
  313.                can now use any drive.  Also re-wrote the input
  314.                routine for when you enter your computer types,
  315.                this is now fully error trapped, you can only
  316.                press a 1, 2, or 3, and you can't do silly things
  317.                like 111.  The bad news is that the interest type
  318.                input routine is still not very error trapped.

  320.                Sorted a problem out with the import ASCII and
  321.                write to pool clashing, it is now all working.
  322.  
  323.                WisDom is now ready for the first release,
  324.                although there is still a lot of work to do on it.
  325.                What I have to do, and will do over Christmas, is
  326.                to finish writing WisDom_S.  I still have to write
  327.                the part where it allows you to merge the pool and
  328.                email files together.

  330. 06/12/92       A lot has happened.  There is now a conference section,
  331.                allowing five different debates to go on at the same
  332.                time.  The WisDom programmer's reference guide has
  333.                also been written, this will not only make John's and
  334.                Kevin's (John being Amiga SYSCOM and Kevin being the
  335.                IBM person) life easier, it will also make mine a lot
  336.                better!  The advertising is well under way.  An A4
  337.                promo for both PDP and WisDom has been written and
  338.                sent off to a small number of people.  Have a look in
  339.                Micro Mart for the WisDom ad.

  341.                Latest news on the college front, me and another 20
  342.                odd people have all been locked out of the computer
  343.                system, our areas have been locked until Tuesday, this
  344.                is due to the supervisor doing a network search and
  345.                finding things that he didn't like.  Oh dear!  What am
  346.                I going to do, COBOL assignment that I've hardly
  347.                started is due in on Friday, "Lowres VGA hardware"
  348.                graphics program in C++ to be in shortly after.

  350. 08/12/92 -     What a great day, two good things have happened.  The
  351.                first is, WisDom is finished!  This time I mean it is
  352.                finished, every option works okay.
  353.  
  354.                The other good news is that the supervisor on the
  355.                college computer network has let me back into my
  356.                computer area. I can now get on with the awful COBOL
  357.                assignment and the lowres VGA graphics program in C.
  358.  
  359. 09/12/92 -     I know I said it was finished, but it wasn't.  I took
  360.                out a couple of bugs and then added the option to
  361.                import ASCII into a conference.  Now it is finished.
  362.  
  363.                College news: COBOL is nearly done. I've got all
  364.                actual programing finished, I now have to write up the
  365.                documenation for it.  I should hopefully get it
  366.                finished by Friday which will give me a week to finish
  367.                the graphics program.  It's then Christmas time!

  369. 06/01/93       All disks sent off and I'm waiting for the first
  370.                WisDom disks to come back.  A couple of problems with
  371.                user disks.

  373.                Wisdom_S is on it's way.  So far you can add a new
  374.                user direct or through the TEMPS file.  you can
  375.                re-read users, re-login, set best before, setup
  376.                conferences.

  378.                A little extra to WisDom: When showing users, a
  379.                SYSCOM's name is marked with "SYS" at the side.

  381.                Back to college.  Time delay in Z80 machine code
  382.                has to be in soon, new C assignment - 4 generation
  383.                programming.

  385. 12/01/93       News is coming in from the Amiga front.  All
  386.                programming has stopped.  Not only has John Briggs
  387.                bought a new Amiga (the A1200) he has also purchased
  388.                AMOS Perfessional and is now having to get to grips
  389.                with them both.
